Eddie Bauer Overview

The Eddie Bauer brand started from humble beginnings in 1920 in Seattle. At only 21 years of age, Eddie Bauer opened the Eddie Bauer tennis shop in the rear of a local shop that catered to hunters and fishermen, and he focused on custom building and repairing tennis rackets during tennis season. Until 1940, this business grew to include custom-made golf clubs and fishing gear, and the name changed to Eddie Bauer’s Sport Shop.

In 1940, the focus of the company changed after Eddie Bauer suffered a case of hypothermia. At that time, outdoorsmen relied on heavy layers of woolen garments that simply could not keep people warm enough in extreme weather. Eddie Bauer developed the first quilted jacket featuring goose down insulation in the United States, and received a patent for the garment, dubbed the “Skyliner.” Following the success of the Skyliner, Eddie Bauer was sought out by the government to develop a flight parka for World War II airmen, the B-9 parka; over 50,000 of these parkas were delivered to help keep US pilots warmer at higher altitudes.

Also, during WWII, Eddie Bauer provided the troops with pants, sleeping bags, and backpacks. So high was the quality of these items, Eddie Bauer was the sole manufacturer to be allowed to provide the military with products that came with a manufacturer’s logo attached.

Following his work providing clothing to US troops, the Eddie Bauer company began to focus more on apparel for active people. In 1945, Eddie Bauer began offering women’s clothes in addition to the by then extensive men’s line. It was also at this time that Eddie Bauer published his first catalog; the initial mailing list was composed of the names of the 14,000 American servicemen who had received clothing made by the Seattle company during World War II. This catalog marketing strategy was so successful that Eddie Bauer left retail sales and sold only by mail, other than a small amount of showroom sales directly from the factory in Seattle.

In 1968, Eddie Bauer himself retired and sold his stock in the company. Eddie Bauer has changed ownership several times since then, but quality has remained consistent to today.
